Source China direct Factory. Current Climate the Covid-19 effects on the Crane Manufacturing market, the cautious production of new stock and the buyers holding still on their hard-earned profits, driven by economics. The Pros is the used crane market are viable cost affective options today.

The production of new cranes and global economic uncertainty, buying used vs buying new is a measured possibility. Here are 5 tips buying a used crane specific to your needs.

1. Budget planning, and sticking to the numbers. Maybe you won a large contract, need the right gear but buying a new crane is not affordable? Then having a plan budget based on numbers should ensure you are buying for profitable outcome.

2. Crane History: the usage and maintenance history – Speaks for itself, complete check on work performance, location, hours, breakdown, damage and a maintenance plan. Breakdown, damage both major or minor, how was it fixed, was it within warranty, did they use original parts from the dealer? Etc. Can you organise a service report completed by 3rd party. To build up a detailed profile and openly discussing it with your senior team makes sense to ensure all aspects are covered before laying down a payment.

3. Pre-Inspection, upon completing full report of a range of cranes, discussion with your team to progress with at least 3 options, as a likely buy, it’s time to consider engaging 3rd party inspection. Most sellers don’t want to hide product defects but as the final stage before payment this is a must.

4. Other considerations: do you have a skilled driver that can handle this crane, are the parts obsolete what is the easy or difficulty in sourcing parts? Do you have an inhouse service dept or do you outsource this? and can they maintain this crane without difficulty. If the crane is too old, then you can continue or abort.

5. Consider all options on the table: with the accumulated information, yourself and your team are now in a powerful position of choices. Is it worth it to buy a used crane “as is” or in need of some repairs? – More than likely, buying a used crane will require some repairs or reconditioning. If purchased correctly, these cranes can make exceptional deals and can be brought back into “like new condition.”

In summary, gather all the information you can, have at least 3 best options, a detailed budget and plan outlay. Over-discuss with your senior team, get another opinion from other Crane professionals. So, before you pull the trigger to purchase new, or good used crane, and perhaps, it may be a sound economic decision to invest in the cost to extend the service life of your current crane. At the end of the day, you may find out that you already have the best used crane on the market.
