In a groundbreaking move, Qatar Industries, a key player in the country's manufacturing sector with 15 industrial factories, reached out to Dracon International Ltd to address critical bottlenecks in their production lines. The objective? To automate parts of their manufacturing processes and introduce innovative robotic solutions that would propel their factories into a new era of efficiency and productivity.
The Beginning of a Transformative Partnership
Dracon International, led by its director Timikara Taurerewa, was chosen to spearhead this initiative. Recognizing the importance of this project, Qatar Industries extended an invitation to Taurerewa, covering flights and accommodations, to define and plan the first robotic project for their steel scaffolding manufacturing arm, which services European markets.
The project began in earnest in July 2024, when Dracon conducted a comprehensive project analysis and sourcing cycle in China. This process involved meticulous research and auditing of potential robotic partners, evaluating case studies, verifying completed projects, and narrowing down the list of suppliers to identify the top candidate. The goal was not just to find a vendor but to establish a partnership with a robotics supplier that could provide a broad range of solutions, from bionics and Tesla robots to advanced AI-powered welding, lifting, and grinding systems.
The Selection Process and Partnership
Dracon’s position as a leader in the global supply chain, backed by a wealth of references and historical case studies, enabled the company to pass rigorous vendor pre-audit procedures. This included comprehensive global documentation, in-house financial audits by reputable accounting firms, and detailed communications with potential partners.
After numerous Zoom meetings and in-depth discussions about robotic technologies and applications, Qatar Industries granted Dracon their first project, which was paid in advance. Taurerewa’s subsequent trip to Qatar on November 10, 2024, marked the start of a five-day orientation and relationship-building process with key stakeholders.
Addressing Qatar’s Manufacturing Challenges
During the orientation, Taurerewa and his team assessed four factories with varying needs for robotic automation. These factories specialized in mold casting, battery production, and steel scaffolding manufacturing. Four robotic solutions were identified, with one project already underway and three more in the pipeline.
As part of the project, ten scaffolding samples were shipped to China for robotic calibration and testing. The results confirmed the viability of the proposed robotic solutions. In parallel, plans were made to bring a senior Qatari engineer to China for training with Dracon’s robotics team. The engineer’s training was a resounding success, ensuring that Qatar would have an in-house team capable of managing and expanding the robotic infrastructure.
Collaborative Efforts in Shanghai
To finalize the project, Taurerewa flew to Shanghai to meet with the Qatari engineer and Dracon’s robotics team. Together, they mapped out the remainder of the project, ensuring seamless production inspections and preparing for the official load-out and delivery of the robotic systems.
A Vision for the Future
This pioneering project marks a significant milestone for Qatar Industries as it embraces automation and robotics to enhance its manufacturing capabilities. For Dracon International, it demonstrates the company’s expertise in sourcing and implementing cutting-edge solutions tailored to meet specific industrial challenges.
The partnership sets the stage for future collaborations, with three additional projects already in the works. Dracon’s ability to deliver results, coupled with its strong relationships with global suppliers, positions the company as a trusted partner in driving innovation and efficiency in Qatar’s manufacturing sector.
As the robotic solutions are integrated and begin transforming operations, this initiative is poised to serve as a blueprint for other industries in the region looking to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies.
